   讲座题目:Nickel Hydroxide Nanoribbons for Efficient Water Splitting and Methanol Oxidation

   报告摘要:

Development of efficient and durable electro-catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and methanol oxidation has a direct impact on energy storage and conversion. In this work, for the first time, we report the successful synthesis of a new Ni(OH)2 structure, Ni(OH)2 nanoribbons (NR-Ni(OH)2) with widths of 2-5 nm, via an electro-oxidation route. Conventional Ni(OH)2 usually requires an overpotential of higher than 300 mV at 10 milliamperes per square centimeter, while NR-Ni(OH)2 shows a record high activity for the oxygen evolution reaction, an overpotential of 162 millivolts and furthermore exhibits long-term stability in alkaline electrolyte. Moreover, the Ni(OH)2 ribbons have excellent electrocatalytic effect on methanol oxidation, leading to the development of the first non-Pt direct methanol fuel cell.   The excellent electrocatalytic effect of NR-Ni(OH)2 is due to its easier OOH* adsorption by the active edge sites. The enhanced catalytic activity of NR-Ni(OH)2 makes it an excellent candidate for industrial applications.

薛军民教授简介:

Xue Junmin is an Associate Professor at MSE of NUS, Singapore. He received   PhD degree from Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Science in 1997. He has been focusing his research on designing and fabricating novel functional nanostructured materials for energy applications with two particular concentrations: (1) developing new generation catalysts for water splitting and (2) design of highly efficient energy storage and generation devices. He has over 150 publications (with H-index 50), and received more than 7500 citations.
