讲座题目:Hunger Positivity Effect in Beauty Perception: Scope and Generalization

讲座摘要:Physical attractiveness is a fundamental aspect of human perception, which attracts scholarly investigations since the beginning of civilization. In this paper, we conducted six studies to investigate whether hunger can affect beauty perception. We found that compared with satiated condition, men in the hungry condition evaluated women as more physically attractive (Studies 1a and 1b, n=126 and 892), whereas women who felt hungry evaluated only men with explicit muscular cues as more physically attractive (Study 2, n=164). We replicated these effects across different hunger manipulations and different physical attractiveness measurements. We further found that reward seeking (Study 3, n=668) underlies the hunger effect. Finally, both men and women over-generalize the hunger effect from sex-specific to broader gendered stimuli: femininity cues (e.g. flower) for men and masculinity cues (e.g., male lion) for women (Studies 4 and 5, n=630 and 170).
