Dr. Alison Calder
Professor Alison Calder’s Lecture on Literature and the Environment
Professor Alison Calder, from Manitoba University (Canada), gave a lecture in Chengyi Building on the evening of June 5, 2007. The title of the lecture is “Literature and the Environment.” All the teachers and students who attended the lecture think it is inspiring.
Professor Calder talked about how literature and the environment were related to each other from many levels and perspectives. She first introduced a relevant concept, eco-criticism and then analyzed how the environment influences the creation of the writer through eco-criticism. She gave the definition of eco-criticism as the study of the environment that is represented in art. The environment is not limited to natural environments, but also includes constructed and modified environments. She presented the features of the relationship between literature and environment in three literary periods: romanticism, modernism, and postmodernism. Romanticism is the cultivation of sensitivity to nature, and the natural world is the key of self-understanding and self-revelation. Quite differently, modernism focuses on the urban and rejects the pastoral. Yet differently, postmodernist writers indulge themselves in playing with language-constructed virtual environment. To wit, they play with signs.
In the last part of her lecture, Professor Calder talked about the influence of Asian poetry on non-Asian Canadian writers, and she shared her own poem with the audience for an ending.
