                  Intelligent Structural Health Management of Safety-Critical Structures

Talk Abstract:

The structural integrity of safety-critical aerospace structures is of enduring concern to the aerospace community.  Structural degradation, whether engendered by inherent material aging due to the environment and service loads (fatigue, corrosion etc) or by unpredictable external events (impact etc), is an inevitable part of life.   The consequences of catastrophic structural failure include loss of life and economic disruption.  Intelligent Structural Health Management (ISHM) systems can help prevent catastrophic structural failure of safety-critical structures such as aircraft which cannot be allowed to fail in service.

ISHM involves feedback-based prediction of structural integrity. On-board diagnostic sensors provide continuous or on-demand information about the state of a structure, and the data from the sensors is incorporated into structural analyses and damage evolution models to assess the state of the structure, and to make probabilistic prognoses about the remaining lifetime. Intelligent SHM represents a shift away from routine inspections which are currently scheduled based on ensemble statistics, to inspections that are scheduled based on the actual state of the structural health of individual structures.  This approach is expected to result in improved safety as well as in increased efficiencies in terms of cost and downtime.

In this talk, I will discuss recent efforts of my group at Northwestern University towards developing ISHM diagnostic and prognostic tools for metallic and composite structures.

Bio: Sridhar Krishnaswamy obtained his B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.  After a short post-doctoral stint at the University of California, San Diego, he joined Northwestern University where he is currently Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Prof. Krishnaswamy is Director of the Center for Quality Engineering and Failure Prevention at NU, a cross-disciplinary research center focused on structural health management of safety-critical aerospace, mechanical and civil structures.
