报告题目:Elucidating the Hallmarks of Collective Cell Migration

摘要: Collective cell migration is a very common feature of many processes in early development, wound healing, and aspects of cancerous tumour dynamics. I will review two areas of application in which we have been working for several years: (a) cranial neural crest cell migration - here, we have used a hybrid cell-based mathematical model that, in collaboration with our experimental colleagues, has helped us reveal new insights into how these cells signal to each other as they move and, as a by-product, suggested a possible cancer treatment; (b) angiogenesis - this is the process by which new blood vessels are created - we use a systematic coarse-grain analysis to derive a partial differential equation model for this phenomenon and find, to our surprise, that it differs from the classical, phenomenologically derived, "snail-trail" model. We investigate the similarities and differences between the two models. In addressing these two problems, we are beginning to determine the common features of collective cell migration and define the "hallmarks of collective cell migration.
